Karakol valley.
Karakol is fortunate to have the magnificent scenery of a national parkright on its doorstep. The national prk was founded in 1997 to reservethe unique and virgin nature. The park gates are only 5km from the towncentre and its main gorges (Karakol and Kashka-Suu Canyons) make anexcellent opportunity for a day trip. In the close lying valleyKurgak-Tor you can visit waterfall cascades, on the right tributary ofKarakol river you will find
thepowerful On-Tor waterfall. The Karakol valley is particularly beautifulwith its slopes densely covered with Tien-Shan fur-trees. KarakolCanyon is popular amongst local people at weekends and offers arelaxed, family atmosphere with a couple of yurt cafes and shashlik(kebab) stands. In winter, whole families come to toboggan and slide onthe snow, slithering around on old tyres, plastic bags and traditionalwooden sledges. Peaceful Kashka-Suu Gorge, leading off from the mainbody of Karakol Canyon, is less frequently visited and makes for goodday hiking possibilities in summer.
