Son-Kul lake
The second largest lake after Issyk-Kul is Son Kul lake, which is located 90 km. northwest of Naryn in a high mountain desert. Son-Kul is surrounded by the rocky Son-Kul Range (4042 m.) in the north, and the Moldo Too Range in the south and north-east (3900 m. ). These mountain ranges are covered with Tien-Shan fir trees.
The total area of the lake is 275 sq. km., it is 15m. deep, and it is situated 3016 m. above sea-level. In winter the lake is covered with thick (1,5m.) ice. The lake is a favorite place for wild geese, ducks and sea-gulls.
The only river flowing out of the lake is Son-Kul with a cascade of waterfalls in a rocky Kok-Dzherty Gorge 4 km away from the lake. The river is the tributary of the largest Tien-Shan river-the Naryn River.
